About Us

We do custom web design and bespoke development specialising in the popular content management system, WordPress

Who’s behind Modernet web design and development?

Modernet was set up by me, Paul Brighton, to provide web design and development services to small to medium-sized companies.

We are based in West Yorkshire, not far from Wakefield and provide a personal service (initial face to face client meeting) if requested by the client to companies within a 30-mile radius although we will take on web design projects from anywhere in the UK or any English language country.

What services do we offer?

We offer custom web design and bespoke WordPress web development services along with WordPress maintenance and content management. Other services include eCommerce websites, WordPress theme and plugin installation and redesigns or optimisation of your existing website.

Why we use WordPress?

WordPress is the most popular content management system (CMS) in use on the web today, it is used by around 60% of all websites that use a CMS. It has a user-friendly admin panel that makes updating content effortless and also comes with some very useful plugins that are free or paid which will add extra functionality to your website.

What plugins do we use regularly?

We only use plugins that are well maintained and updated often. The main plugins we use on most websites are for custom fields, contact forms, eCommerce and SEO. We may use other plugins, paid or free to add some extra functionality but we will ask the client beforehand so they know exactly what is getting added to their website.

See the list below for the main plugins we use with links to their websites:

Frequently Asked Questions

If you can’t find the answer your looking for, please contact us and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible

  • How much do you charge for a website?

This is a hard question to answer, it all depends on how many pages and features you want on your website. Every website we build is bespoke to you so there’s no one price fits all.

  • How long does it take to build a website?

This depends on the number of pages and functionality you require. We aim to complete small projects in 4-6 weeks, but this will increase for larger websites. You will be provided with a completion date within your proposal and contract.

  • How do we communicate throughout the website build?

Our preferred method of contact throughout the project will be email but you will also be able to contact us by phone or messenger.

We do request that any changes you want to make to the design or functionality of your website after the project has started are sent via email or our contact form.

  • What will you need from me?

Initially, we will send you a questionnaire to fill out so we can find out more about you and your business and what styles of website design you like.

Then, to start your project, we will need all the content such as images, text, emails, addresses and phone numbers that you want to be used on the site.

  • Do I need to pay for the website upfront?

We ask you to pay 50% upfront before we start work on your project and the final 50% just before we upload your website to your hosting server.

  • What forms of payment do you accept?

We take payments through an online service called Bonsai, they let us take card payments through Stripe or you can pay through PayPal.

  • Will my website be SEO-friendly?

We don’t offer SEO marketing solutions, but all our websites will be built using on-page SEO techniques and all the sites we build use the Yoast plugin which helps to improve your online presence.

  • Do you provide website hosting?

We don’t provide website hosting at the moment. We can advise you on what type of hosting plan you should purchase and help you out if needed with the setup process.

  • How much does hosting cost?

You can purchase hosting plans from around £100 per year that are great for small business websites and blogs and some even include free SSL certificates and domain names. You may need to pay a lot more if your website has lots of visitors, has loads of content or you are running a large online eCommerce store.

  • Do you do face to face meetings?

You can request an initial face to face meeting at your business if you are located within a 30-mile radius from us. We usually do the initial meetings over the phone or by video conference (Zoom, Google Meet, etc) as this is a home-based business and we are not office-based.

  • I don’t live in the UK; can you still build a website for me?

We are happy to work with clients from any country as long as the websites are to be built in the English language and the client speaks English.

  • I already have a website, how easy is it to change it?

Really easy, after the design phase of the project, we will develop your new website on our local server and send you a link to preview it once it is completed. We will then swap your old website for your new one, this process can usually be performed within an hour, so you’ll not be without a website online for long.

  • Do you provide training to help me use my new website?

Yes, we can provide training, so your employees know how to add or update content to your website. This can be provided in person, for local clients within a 30-mile radius or over screen share software for clients that are further away.

We are also available over email or our contact form if you need any advice on how to perform tasks within the WordPress admin panel.

Web Design & Development

  • Will my website be mobile friendly?

All websites we build are mobile friendly and will be fully responsive on desktop, laptop, mobile phones, and tablets. They will be tested with popular browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari.

  • What design tools do you use?

We use Figma for designing all our websites and Photoshop for editing and resizing images. Figma is web-based graphics editing and user interface design app popular with UI/UX designers at the moment. It also includes a feature that allows us to share the designs with you easily so you will be able to let us know if you want any of the design elements changing before we build your website.

  • Do you use drag and drop page builders?

No, we build websites using PHP, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and Advanced Custom Fields to add the data. The only time we might use drag and drop page builders is if you have specifically asked us to use a template or theme that uses a page builder.

  • I’ve seen a template/theme that I like, can you install and customise it and add the content?

Yes, we can take a template or theme you have seen and install it on a WordPress website. We will then add your content and customise it with your brand colours, logo, and preferred typography.

  • How does the web design process work?

Initially, we will design the home page and send you a link so you can view it and let us know what you think, we will then do up to three revisions to make sure you are pleased with the design.

Only once you are happy with the home page design, we will then work on the designs of the other pages.

  • Can you provide images for my website?

Images can be sourced from stock photography websites, both free and paid. If you would like us to find the images for you, please let us know in the initial consultation or the client questionnaire as this will be charged as an extra service.

  • Will you update and fix bugs on my website after it goes live?

Once your website is live on the internet, you have 7 days to test your site to find any bugs. This should include checking your contact forms are working, checking that links go to the correct pages or websites or finding any content that was added incorrectly. These will then be fixed for free if we are informed within the 7-day period.

  • Can I update the website content myself?

Yes, all our websites are built with Advanced Custom Fields which makes it easy to update the content of your website yourself.

WordPress Maintenance

  • Do I need to pay for a whole year of website maintenance?

No, we work on a month-to-month basis, and you’re not tied in in any way. You will be provided with a date that the maintenance will be performed each month and we will invoice you once the maintenance has been completed. We will also provide you with a report of all the work that was carried out.

  • Why does my website need regular maintenance?

WordPress websites like most websites need updating and maintaining to reduce security risks and it can help with the performance and page speed of your site which in turn will give your users a great experience.

Most maintenance plans include taking regular backups of your files for your peace of mind, and it is also great for your SEO to update content on a regular basis.

  • I need a new page adding to my site, is that included in the content updates?

No, any major work that needs to be carried out such as adding new pages or installing plugins are not included in our maintenance plans. Please contact us and we will provide you with a competitive quote.

  • What access will you require to my website?

We will need your login details to your WordPress admin panel and access to your hosting account and cPanel.

  • Do you provide WordPress maintenance for websites you didn’t build?

Yes, we can provide WordPress maintenance for any website built with the WordPress content management system.

  • Will my website be down while it’s getting updated?

Yes, while plugins, themes and WordPress core updates are being updated your website will show a message to users letting them know it’s in maintenance mode and this normally only takes a few minutes to complete.

  • How can I downgrade, upgrade, or cancel my maintenance plan?

Contact us by email or our contact form to request to downgrade, upgrade or cancel your maintenance plan and we will send you confirmation. You may need to sign another contract if you are upgrading or downgrading your plan.

  • Can I do WordPress maintenance myself?

You can update and maintain your WordPress website yourself, but it is possible that you will break your site and may cost more, in the long run, to get it fixed. If you do decide to maintain your website yourself, make sure you take a backup of your website files and database before you start.
